Yesterdays 2nd TinMan Triathlon got underway after a short delay due to some testing sea conditions. The south easter wind had been blowing for 4 days straight and it causeda strong midbreak rip which tested our newly appointed Durban Surf Life guards. However we had plenty of water support with 2 jet ski's , a duck and 6 lifeguards on knee boards and the swimmers brought in, carried on with a timing chip. The rest of the event legs running smoothly. We had a record number of Mini Triathletes taking to the starting line, with over 70 kids and adults rushing into the water to take on the 200m swim, 5km cycle and 2.5km run. The Sprint entries were solid and the Challenge entries down significantly from the last event. Overall we took in over 320 entries for the event, giving us a 18% growth from the same event in 2014.
The Durban sun came out around 10am, giving the athletes some perfect warm racing conditions on a flat fast course. James Haw and Amber Schlebush won the Mini Triathlon Titles with Gareth Marquess and Kim Watchurst winning the Sprint Triathlon race. A tussle in the front of the Men's Challenge Triathlon gave the spectators some exciting actions, with Donovan Van Gelder, Brad Venter and Glen Gore all in hot contention for the winners tape. Donovan make his move on the 1st 5km run lap and managed to pull 150m ahead of Brad venter to win the Men's section. Carol Reeves had an outstanding performance in the ladies race, clinching the top spot from the swim exit until the finishing line, finishing ahead of Hayley Mee and Jessica Ter Wolbeek.
The next event is only in 4 weeks time (25th October) , with the Final event in the 2015 only 3 weeks after that on the 15th of November. This last event will the ideal warm up for the Midlands Ultra Triathlon at Midmar Dam on the 29th November.
