The 1st Durban Multisport Series event which is proudly sponsored by McCarthy Toyota and Suncoast kicked off on Sunday morning with over 250 competitors taking to the starting line. Local athletes were treated to some exciting racing by top SA triathlete Claude Eksteen, who competes internationally throughout the year. Claude who comes from the local highway area, is currently training in South Africa, before he launches into his international race schedule.
The first race off was the Rookie Triathlon, who's competitors completed a 200m swim, followed by a 5km cycle and a 1.25km run. Connor Ahern managed to claim first place here, while Natasha Hartman clinched her win in the ladies race. The next race up was the Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon races, which provided some exciting racing as the event numbers grew considerably from the last event. Mitchell Ginsberg clinched the men's triathlon win here, while Taylor Glover won her sprint triathlon race. The Duathlon event was won by Darren Goddard who is making his comeback to Multisport racing from a 2yrs absence. Geraldine Von Flintal then won the ladies duathlon convincingly in a time of 1hrs 12min 53 seconds.
The Olympic race, which started at 7:45am, had the competitors taking on a 1.5km swim, followed by a 40 km bike and a 10km run. Glen Gore and Jeff Norton were first to come out the water, with Johnny De Dominicis and Claude Eksteen coming out 3rd and 4th. However Johnny De Dominicis made his move on the 3rd lap of the bike route and lead the race coming into transition two first. He headed off onto the running route just ahead of Claude Eksteen and Jeff Norton. However Claude's superior running speed managed to get him into the lead and he finished his 10km run in a time of 35min21 seconds, putting him 3min 30seconds ahead of second placed Johnny De Dominicis and over 4mins ahead of 3rd placed Brad Venter.
Race winners claimed the lions portion of the R10 000 prize money, while lucky
draw winners went home with over R15 000 worth of prizes from Xterra,
Nike Vision, Saucony, Palmers and Thule. The next race in the Durban
Multisport Series takes place on the 22nd of July at Suncoast Beach.
