Annah Watkinson started Sunday's MiWay Sun City Ultra with a little bit of added pressure as she was on the verge of clinching a 3rd consecutive victory in the Ultra Series.
Watkinson had a great swim coming out of the water, 1 minute ahead of Jade Nicole and 2 minutes ahead of Magda Niewoudt, who were billed as her pre-race competition. Also in the mix was a return for Kirsten Shut with previous winner, Claire Horner in the hunt in the early stages of the bike.
Watkinson is power on the bike and managed to ride a solid 2:28 while Nicole matched her almost to the second. Niewoudt was 1 minute faster than both ladies with a great cycle time of 2:27 as she closed the gap to Nicole with the 2 ladies then chasing Watkinson for the remainder of the bike. The out and back 2 lap bike course however allowed Watkinson to keep a very close eye on the pursuers and she was managing her cycle effort perfectly to ensure the gap was never less than 60 seconds as they headed towards T2 and the start of the run.
By now the heat at the Sun Resort was beginning to mount with Watkinson heading out onto the 21km run route with a slender lead over Nicole and Niewoudt. Watkinson then showed some true class and strength as she ran her way to a fine 3rd consecutive victory with a very good run time of 1:28 to break the record and take a win in a time of 4:24.
Watkinson as she faded a little on the run to come home for a great 2nd placing in 4:34. Niewoudt who is normally extremely strong on the run, had a semi decent run time to clinch the final podium spot in 4:45. Watkinson is the queen of the show at the moment but the young ladies are starting to apply the heat more consistently these days and Annah will have to stay sharp to ensure she keeps these young ladies at bay come the next race in September down in the Cape.
