The ever popular TINMAN Triathlon Series presented by Zone3 which has been in existence for well over 15yrs, is set to light up the South African Triathlon Scene once again starting 23rd April. While the rest of the country goes into slumber over the winter months, Durban is alive and kicking as they host the only draft legal triathlon series in Africa that takes place in the months of April, July, August and October. With the favourable climate in existence on the East Coast during the winter months, The Tinman Triathlon Series is able to deliver up a triathlon event that ensures the triathlon scene stays very much alive over the chilly months with some fast paced racing action.
There are some significant changes to the TINMAN SERIES in 2017 which athletes need to be aware of. There will be no on the day registrations as per previous, so athletes will need to pre-enter via the website. Due to the popular nature of this Tinman series, the organisers often have had hundreds of competitors sign up on race day which proved challenging to ensure that start times were adhered to. In order streamline the day’s activities and ensure that everything runs smoothly and on time, athletes will all need to be registered , entered and paid before they arrive on race day itself.
The organisers have taking it upon themselves to ensure that there will be no entry fee hike in 2017 which is some great news for all competitors concerned. The only change in the registration fees will be the requirement of the mini triathletes to pay a day licence sanctioning fee of R30 which goes to Triathlon South Africa. Athletes are encouraged to sign up with their local provincial triathlon organisation which bypasses the day licence fee at all events during the year.
There will be prizes for the top 3 male and female athletes across the line for all the events that take place on race day. The 10km Run/Mini Triathlon/Sprint Triathlon and Challenge Triathlon will see the cream of the crop racing against each other over a closed racing circuit format. Athletes are reminded that this is a draft legal series so only road bikes are permitted with tri-bars that conform to the ITU rules.
Another great concept with the TINMAN Series is the relay element that allows athletes, families and friends to gather a threesome and compete in either the sprint or challenge event on the day. This is an ideal stepping stone for those that perhaps want to do it alone but prefer to try their hand at the relay element first and see what the sport is all about. Most relay athletes sooner or later take up the challenge to compete in the event individually themselves so the relay format is proving to be the breeding ground for some future triathlon junkies.
The Tinman Series will see the introduction of some new sponsors for the 2017 series together with existing sponsors that have been around for a good few years. ZONE 3, one of the world’s leading triathlon wetsuit and apparel brands will take on the role of being the official Presenting Sponsor for 2017. ZONE 3 is making huge inroads into the local market place and the TINMAN SERIES presents them with an ideal opportunity to come face to face with the end consumer. Brooks Running South Africa and CATLIKE are also new sponsor additions which will further enhance the status of this elite series. aQuelle, Thule, 32Gi and Suncoast Casino are back for some more action having been involved in this series now for a number of years. Rest assured the TINMAN SERIES has some serious backing from some of the country’s leading suppliers and manufacturers.
Registration takes place on the Suncoast Casino lawns on each race day from 5:15am – 6:30am with the first race getting underway at 7am (10km run). Next up is the Mini Triathlon (7:10) then Sprint Triathlon (7:20) and lastly the Challenge Triathlon at 7:40am.
